Sustainable Luxury - the Sustainability of a Lab Grown Diamond

Diamond mining has a significant impact on our environment.   Thanks to sophisticated and innovative technology, we can now grow diamonds without contributing to these negative impacts.

Lab created diamonds are a responsible choice given that no mining is required. The lab-grown process uses a lot less water and energy to generate the diamond.

The table below captures the key environmental differences between a diamond and lab grown diamond.

  •  A Lab-grown diamond consumes approximately 18 gallons of water per carat.
  • A mined diamond consumes at least 126 gallons of water per carat.
  • On average, a one-carat lab-grown diamond requires 75 kilowatt per hour (kWh) to produce.
  • Extracting mined diamonds requires 149.58 kilowatt per hour (kWh) for each carat.
  • A carat from a lab-grown diamond emits about six pounds of carbon; and zero pounds of sulfur oxide.
  • A traditionally mined diamond produces at least 125 pounds of carbon for each carat. Mined diamonds also emit more than 30 pounds of sulfur oxide — which damages the human respiratory system.
  • The lab-grown process emits little gaseous emissions of significant damage.
  • In total, air emissions from a single mined carat is 1.5 billion times higher than a carat of a lab-grown diamond.

Lab-created diamonds are inherently and significantly less detrimental to the environment as it takes considerably less energy to grow a diamond in a lab than it does to dig it out of the ground. Lab grown diamonds are visually and chemically identical to diamonds to mined diamonds, and they are certified exactly the same way a mined diamonds is.
